Sewing Worlds Together With SEAMS: A Mechanism To Construct Large-Scale Virtual Environments

چکیده
Despite the undisputed visual appeal of 3-D applications on the Web, efforts like the virtual reality modeling language (VRML) [Pesc1995] are still not in widespread use and commercial three-dimensional worlds like Alphaworld [Worl1997]. are only sparsely populated. Why is it that the idea of Cyberspace as first presented over a decade ago in William Gibson’s novel “Neuromancer” [Gibs1984] is so enormously appealing, yet we see little manifestation of these ideas in our everyday technological environment? A partial answer may be found by looking at some important prerequisites for an implementation of Cyberspace [Schm1996a]: • Scalability means that virtual environments can continue to grow without any limitation. Beyond technical challenges, organizational issues come into play, which have been widely neglected. In particular, connection of individually modeled virtual environments lacks support. • Continuity allows the user to travel to any place in a virtual universe without ever having to resort to non-continuous motion such as teleportation (anchors in VRML), which frequently leads to disorientation [Bowm1997]. • Democracy. Everybody should be able to build his own world without being constrained in any way. One should not be constrained by a providers’s policy or by “real estate” management in Cyberspace, as in Stephenson’s novel “Snow Crash” [Step1992], where prestigious coordinates for personal worlds are valuable assets.

Message from P2P-NVE Program Chair
The rapid growth and popularity of networked virtual environments (NVEs) such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) in recent years have spawned a series of research interests in constructing such large-scale virtual environments. For increasing scalability and decreasing the cost of management and deployment, more and more studies propose using peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures to const...
متن کاملBringing People Together-An Infrastructure for Shared Virtual Worlds on the Internet
VRML (the Virtual Reality Modeling Language) has brought 3D objects and virtual worlds to a large number of Internet users. While it provides a suitable basis for the platform independent description of virtual worlds, an appropriate network architecture required to realize shared virtual worlds on the Internet is still an open issue. In this paper we will review some basic network archi-tectur...
متن کاملA Priority Updating Communications Model for Networked Virtual Environments
The popularity and success of networked virtual environments in applications such as massively multiplayer online games has led to the development of very large-scale multi-user networked virtual environments. Such systems create virtual worlds where thousands of users, who might be physically located all over the globe, can interact together through the shared virtual environment. In order for...
متن کاملNavigational agents for large scale virtual worlds
This poster argues for an agent based approach to tackle difficulties users usually experience when navigating in large scale 3D computer virtual environments (CVEs). This view is examined from two different perspectives namely that of solitary and collaborative wayfinding.
متن کاملLarge-Scale Mapping and Navigation in VirtualWorlds: Thesis Summary
The prevalence of virtual worlds presents a challenge for intelligent mobile agents. Online, large, persistent virtual worlds such as Second Life and massively multi-player online games are becoming more popular. There is a challenge to provide intelligent agents for these environments that are able to generate and use maps to navigate the world without long delays or a large amount of map pre-...
